The term “gypsy” is derogatory to people of Roma descent, but it has come to mean so much more in North American culture. In our society, gypsy has come to mean free-spiritedness, spontaneity, and bohemianness, not to mention traveling through the night. In fact, it has also been used to describe forced sterilization, and even Hitler’s genocide of the Romany people. But is that true?
